Cheap Cuts of Beef for Jerky
What's everyone's cheapest/favorite cut of meat to use for jerky
Just picked up my first used electric smoker so I can start making jerky and not pay a stupid amount of money at the store for it. I went to our local Mexican meat market and just got a couple pounds of unseasoned carne asada since it was already about the thickness I wanted but wasn't the cheapest when all said and done. My question is what cheap as hell cut of meat is good for jerky?

I really like the eye of round. Nice uniform pieces with great chew and texture. I work at a meat locker and make jerky every couple weeks. We use inside/top, eye and bottom round roasts that we freeze and slice against the grain on the saw about a 1/4" thick. We've got a few guys that come in to get jerky meat sliced for them. Some like it thicker/thinner, some like it with the grain. It's all a matter of preference. We sell all our round slices for $4.69/lb, btw. Have fun!

I useveye of round as well, works great and price point is great when sales are on.

Thanks so much. After posting I went to Winco and bought a bottom round roast 3.5lbs at $2.89lb and asked them to cut it at 1/4". I'm glad to see you do the same thing!

Usually use London broil @ 4.99/lb or pork tenderloin @ 2.29/lb.

London broil is my go to! Harris Teeter has a BOGO deal every 3 to 4 weeks. Ends up costing nearly $3/Lb.

Eye of round from Costco. I pay my annual membership in meat savings alone.

"Lean Ground beef"
It's just cheap lean mixed cuts from the butcher that are ground up, usually about 90-95% lean. Whole cuts get stuck something terrible in my teeth, so I tend to make jerky from ground meat.
Edit: Thanks for the downvotes for answering the question honestly I guess? How dare I have a different favorite than you.

I make it like this sometimes as well. It's a great change up. And very easy to chew.

Honestly, I just grab this pre-sliced 'stir fry' package at Walmart. It's bottom round and already between 1/4 to 1/8 inch thick. It's not really too fatty and always makes for a nice chewy jerky.

I do the same but my local Walmart hasn't had them for weeks now 😥

This may seem unethical to some but when my grocery place has a huge sale on meat like $1.99 top round london broil. It's usually for a week. So I call up and order say 10 to 20 pounds and have them cut it if they can for me. So I go in and get that. Then on the last day of the sale go in late close to closing when the meat deli is shut down. Usually they have already put it away by then but the deal is still good according to the ad deal. Then ask the manager or check stand person for a rain check which is usually good for 90 days. So then you have 90 days to get more meat for the same deal. Gotta do what you gotta do sometimes. I mean I'm paying the advertised price still and they are getting my business and more since I shop other groery there anyway.

As someone who worked in a deli for years, I hate you.
As someone who makes lots of jerky, I respect your game.
Cheers.

I use sirloin. Very tender final product. Fairly lean, and what fat there is, is easy to trim with a good pair of kitchen sheers. $6.49 /lb. at Costco.
I've also been known to make chili with tenderloin.

I'm going to have to try that!

Eye of round, 2-3.99 at Costco. I slice it into stick jerky, but have used a wheel to slab it, works both ways.
